Solar energy uses the sun's light and heat to generate renewable or 'green' power. Solar panels, or photovoltaic cells, harness the most common form of solar energy.

Benefits

Lowering your Electricity Bill is a priority in most homes and generating your energy through the sun's power is a simple way to reduce your electric bill. Most solar energy systems come with a very extended warranty—sometimes up to 25 years. Maintenance usually only requires an annual cleaning, and the solar PV and thermal parts will need to be changed every ten years. There are no moving parts, so there's less that could break down or go wrong. Since solar energy systems are easy to maintain, you won't have to spend too many repairs.

The initial installation of a solar power system can be pretty costly. Therefore, every home is designed with a solar system as a single unit. Homeowners can finance the system as part of their mortgage.

Community Solar Farm

When most people think of solar energy, a solar array for residential and business typically comes to mind. Even though this is standard for individual households, it isn't the only option. Depending on the community, developers, farmers, and other landowners can use the community solar energy to supply their power and for extra cash. 

A community solar farm supplies less than 5 megawatts of power, though most provide 1 megawatt or less. A 1-megawatt facility can deliver approximately 160 average-sized homes with electricity, and a 5-megawatt farm can service at least 800 homes to get an idea of how much power these farms provide. This arrangement is potentially up to 15% more efficient than many rooftop solar systems. The amount of land needed for a 1-megawatt facility is approximately 2.5 acres.

Landfill Gas

Landfill gas is about 40-60% methane, with the remainder being mostly carbon dioxide (CO2). Landfill gas also contains varying amounts of nitrogen, oxygen, water vapor, sulfur, and other contaminants. Methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide (CO) can be combusted or oxidized with oxygen. This energy is suitable as a fuel for gas engines to convert into electricity.

We leverage our experience with capturing and using methane from coal mines to generate renewable energy; using wellheads and controls systems; we capture the gas emissions from landfill digestion. Our Landfill Management strategy includes:

  • Reduce the potential for landfill gas migration outside the landfills
  • Minimize passive landfill gas emissions; and
  • Control potential landfill odors
